The Battle of the Giants
We analyzed over 5,000 game prices across both platforms in 2025. Here is what we found:
Steam Sales
- Frequency: Massive seasonal sales (Summer, Winter) offer consistent deep discounts across the entire catalog.
- Indie Support: Steam is unbeaten for indie game discounts.
- Bundle Deals: "Complete your collection" bundles often result in significantly lower prices if you own parts of a series.
Epic Games Store
- Coupons: The "Epic Coupon" (usually 33% off on top of sale prices) is a game-changer. It frequently makes AAA newer titles cheaper on Epic than Steam historically lows.
- Exclusive Deals: Epic pays for timed exclusives, often launching with a discount.
- Cashback: Epic Rewards gives you 5% back, effectively a permanent 5% discount.
The Verdict
- For New AAA Games: Epic Games Store (during Coupon events) wins hands down.
- For Back Catalogue & Indies: Steam is usually cheaper and has a better library.
- Freebies: Epic gives away high-quality games; Steam relies on publisher-driven "Free Weekends" or smaller indie giveaways.
